Zack Kinuthia is the Chief Administrative Secretary in the ministry of education. The outspoken former SONU President was appointed as the education CAS in January 2020 by President Uhuru Kenyatta becoming the youngest individual to hold the office. Kinuthia hails from Murang’a county.
After sitting for his KCPE, Zack received a letter to attend Kigumo Bendera High School in Murang’a. Unfortunately, the family did not raise enough finance for his school fees. He was forced to repeat Standard 8 as the mother sought the money for high school education.
After the second attempt, he was admitted to Gaichanjiru High School where he sat for his KCSE exam. He later enrolled in the University of Nairobi in the School of Law. He holds a Law degree from the institution.
Zack began his political career back in the University of Nairobi when he was first elected at the chairman of SONU. He served in the coveted position between 2013 and 2014.
He was thereafter replaced by Babu Owino, who is the current Member of Parliament for Embakasi East Constituency. Coincidentally, during the time Kinuthia was the SONU President, CS Magoha was the institution’s Vice Chancellor.
Functions of CAS at the ministry of education
Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) at the ministry of education plays the role of assisting the cabinet secretary in coordinating the running of the ministry. They are like assistant ministers but with less responsibilities.
This role is however not defined in Kenya’s 2010 constitution. The position was created by President Uhuru Kenyatta in January 2018 for regional balance.
