Schools Involved In Exam Irregularity Risks Closure As Ministry Of Education Issues New Guidelines For Institutions Establishment.

Schools found to have been involved in examination irregularities will have their license revoked a new registration guideline for basic education institutions spell out.

Stringent standards to be met by the learning institutions failure to which their licenses will be cancelled. No school private or public will now be allowed to establish learning facilities in less than an eighth of an acre for the lowest cadre of learning.

Both public and private schools have in the past been in land ownership tassels disrupting learning and in some cases leading to deregistration of the institutions thereby.

The matter that has been affecting hundreds of learners across the country has seen the ministry of education through a nine-member team revise the registration guidelines for new institutions.

For any new establishment, the county education board must confirm availability of a site plan approved by the department of public works, a valid title deed or lease agreement infrastructure approvals from relevant bodies as well as the suitability of site must first be obtained.

The new guidelines which cover both the 8-4-4 and new establishments as well as the new system requires all basic education institutions to have at least two pre-school classes, 8 classes for primary, 4 classes and a lab for secondary schools.

The distance between two primary schools must be 600 meters, the same applies to secondary schools whether day or boarding. To establish a new public primary school in dense areas, the nearest existing public primary school should have at least two streams with a minimum population of 480 learners.

For the arid and semi-arid areas, the nearest institution should have at least 60 learners institutions and must also observe high sanitation standards.

All ablution blocks will now be attached with dormitories that must have ventilated closets and doors to open outwards. For mixed schools, toilets must be in opposite direction, doors should not face fences or roads, at least one disability toilet of each gender.

The ministry has also set the minimum land size for the establishment of schools for pre-primary one and two at least an eighth acre is required. For pre-primary one and two that also has grades 1, 2 and 3 at least the institution must be established on half an acre of land, and one acre for primary and junior secondary.

At least three acres will be approved for a whole school and 15 acres for a teacher’s training institute in the new guidelines. Counties are only allowed to register not more than two colleges schools.
